Into His FamilyLuke 15:22

The Robe He Would Not Wear

This message is for the man who accepted being forgiven and has refused everything that came after it, and lives in his father's house on servant's terms

He came back eleven years ago and he has been living here ever since on terms nobody set but him.

Nobody in that house treats him as staff. That is worth saying at the start, because it would be an easier story if they did. His father embraced him on the road before he had finished the sentence he had been rehearsing for four days, and there was a meal that people in that village still mention, and in eleven years not one person has raised the years he was away.

And Ihab has never sat at the head of that table.

He eats standing up, mostly. He is the one who carries dishes in from the kitchen when there are guests, and he does it before anybody asks, and he does it well, and there is a story the family tells about him being helpful that is affectionate and slightly wrong. He does not take a share of anything. When his father wanted to put his name on the land four years ago he found a reason it would complicate things, and the reason was real, and it was not the reason.

He is not sulking. He is not performing humility. If you got him alone late at night he could tell you exactly what it is, because he has known since the road: he accepted the forgiveness and he has never once accepted the restoring, and he does not know how to, and he has built eleven years of usefulness on top of a speech that was never finished.

If you took the forgiveness and declined everything that came after it, here is the question. Why have you never once put the robe on?

The son had a speech and the father interrupted it

The son rehearsed it in a field. It had three parts, and everybody knows the first two: I have sinned against heaven and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

And then the third part, which was his own proposal for how to proceed: make me as one of thy hired servants.

He got the first two out. The text is very careful about this. He said the sin and the unworthiness, and then his father, who had already run to him and fallen on his neck and kissed him, speaks, and he does not answer the speech at all.

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.Luke 15:22

Look at what the father does not say. He does not say the son is wrong about the sin, and he does not correct the unworthiness. He simply never lets the third part happen, and he issues instructions instead, to other people, over the son's head.

The robe, which is the household's honor. The ring, which is authority to act in the family's name. The shoes, which servants did not wear in that world; sons did.

Three items, and every one of them is about position rather than pardon.

You are inside a set of instructions that were given over your head, and it is already the robe and the ring and the shoes, and the father never once responded to the proposal about hired servants. I am not being warm at a man carrying dishes. It is written in Luke 15:22, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a father's interruption and lays it on somebody who has been finishing a speech for eleven years.

Forgiveness and restoring are two different transactions

And here is the distinction that explains the whole of Ihab, and it is not obvious and almost nobody teaches it.

Forgiveness settles what happened. Restoring settles what he is now.

Ihab has the first. He genuinely does, and he is not tormented about the past; he has never spoken about those years because he does not need to, and that is a real and completed thing.

What he does not have is the second, and the reason is that the second requires something the first does not. Being forgiven asks you to receive a verdict. Being restored asks you to occupy a position, and occupying a position means being seen in it, at a table, in a robe, in front of people who remember.

That is much harder for a certain kind of man, and it is why he carries dishes.

You are restored as well as forgiven, and it is already both, and the second one was never optional in the father's instructions. Scripture says that as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God (John 1:12), and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a person into a position rather than leaving them at a door.

What his refusal costs the house

And now the thing nobody has ever said to him, and it should be said gently and it should be said.

His refusal is not private. He thinks it is; he thinks he has arranged a modest life inside a generous house and harmed nobody.

But there is a chair at the head of that table that has been empty for eleven years, and his father has looked at it every single time. A gift that is never used is not neutral in a family. It sits there.

And the ring in that story was not decoration either. It was the authority to act for the household, which means the father intended his son to be able to do things in his name, and eleven years of a man refusing to hold that is eleven years of things not done.

You are able to take a position that has been kept open, and the keeping is already going on, and the empty chair has never been neutral. It is written that the father called for the robe and the ring and the shoes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept a place at a table that a man has been walking past with dishes.

The breakthrough

So tonight, in the courtyard, with the lamps up and the tables laid, we do the small thing that eleven years have been avoiding.

Name one thing that is now yours by belonging rather than by earning. Out loud. Not by usefulness, not by service, not by anything you have carried in from a kitchen.

Say it in the present tense: I am a son in this house. Or: the ring is mine. Or: there is a chair at that table with my name on it.

Say whichever one you can get out, and if your voice does something on the way, let it.

You are a son and it is already the father's own instruction, and the robe was brought out before you finished apologizing. The word says bring forth the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding a robe for eleven years while a man found things to carry.

Then go and sit down in that chair. The dishes can wait, and somebody younger can bring them, and it will do them good.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Speech I have kept rehearsed since the day I came back, you are retired and he never let me finish it. Luke 15:22 says the father called for the best robe and a ring and shoes before the third part could be said. He did not answer the proposal about hired servants at all.
  2. Habit of building a modest life inside a generous house, get out of this courtyard, in the name of Jesus. It is written that as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, and a position is not the same transaction as a pardon. The empty chair at that table was never neutral.
  3. Lord, You gave the instructions over my head and Your Spirit has held a robe for eleven years. I am saying it out loud in this courtyard: I am a son in this house, and the ring is mine. You seated me, I am Yours, and I am going to go and sit down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
