He has never told anybody, and I want to start by saying that I am not going to be the one who asks him to.
It happened when he was thirty. He is fifty-eight. In twenty-eight years it has not been said out loud to another human being, not to his wife, not to the man he walks this headland with every Saturday who is closer to him than his own brother, not once in a room with a counselor, not in a church, not anywhere.
And here is the strange thing that has grown up around it, which is really what this article is about.
Somewhere in the second decade, the silence became a second thing. The original thing is what it is; he has never made it smaller than it was and he does not now. But the not saying, the twenty-eight years of arranging his face at certain moments in conversations, of being a man his wife does not fully know, of loving people from behind a small locked door, has become its own weight, and he cannot tell anymore which of the two is heavier.
He has begun to suspect, and this is the part that costs him, that God is waiting for him to say it to somebody before anything can be done about it. That there is a queue, and confession to a human being is the ticket, and he does not have the ticket and never will.
Keanu walks up here on Saturdays with the wind coming across and the light going gold on the water, and he is a good man and everyone would tell you so, and he carries a locked room up this hill every week.
If that is you, then hear the first thing clearly: you are not being asked here to tell a person. Not on this site, not by me. There is a psalm about exactly this, written by a man who knew what silence does to a body, and the speaking it asks for is to God, and the covering in it is not done by the speaking at all.
What the psalm says silence does
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.Psalm 32:1
That is the first line, and we will come back to it, because it is the destination. But look at what David writes two verses later, because he is the only writer in Scripture who describes the physical experience of carrying an unsaid thing.
When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer (Psalm 32:3 to 4).
His bones. His moisture. Drought in the body. This is not a man describing guilt as an idea; this is a man describing what silence did to him physically, and Keanu, at fifty-eight, with a shoulder that will not settle and a jaw he does not know he is clenching, would recognize every word of it.
You are carrying a weight in your body and it is already named in the psalm, and it was named by somebody who did the same thing you have been doing. I am not telling a walking man what is wrong with him. It is written in Psalm 32, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moved a man to write down what silence costs so that another man would know he was not the first.
Who does the covering
Now the crucial thing, and it is the thing that will decide whether Keanu comes down this hill differently.
Read the first verse again. Whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Both of those are passive. Somebody else is doing the forgiving and somebody else is doing the covering. David does not say: blessed is the man who managed to tell someone.
And in the next verse he says what he did do: I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest.
Unto thee. To God. That is the whole address in that psalm. There is no second party in the room.
You are dealing directly with the one who covers, and the covering is already His work, and no human being stands between you and it. Scripture says I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that direct address available on a headland with nobody else on it.
The silence and the sin are two different things
And here is the thing that would take a weight off him if he heard nothing else.
The silence is not the sin. It is a consequence, and it is heavy, and God is not angry about it. A man who does not speak about a thing for twenty-eight years is not being defiant. He is protecting people, mostly, and himself, and he is frightened, and the fear is not wickedness.
So when the weight of the silence gets read as evidence of ongoing guilt, that is a misreading of a real experience, and it keeps a man locked because it makes the lock look like justice.
You are not under judgment for the silence, and the covering is already complete, and the heaviness in your body was never the verdict. It is written that blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven and whose sin is covered, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a weight from a verdict in a man who has had them fused together for decades.
So here on this path, with the wind and nobody within half a mile, we are going to do the one speaking the psalm actually asks for.
Say it out loud, once, to God. Out loud is the point, and it is why the wind is a gift. It has been inside you for twenty-eight years and a thing said with your own mouth into the air is a different object from a thing thought.
You do not have to describe it. He was present. A name is enough, and the naming is once.
Then cover it in one sentence: that Christ carried this, and it is covered.
You are the one that verse calls blessed, and it is already covered, and the covering was never waiting on you to tell a human being. The word says blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has walked this headland beside a man every Saturday for years without once asking him for an account.
Then walk down. Whether you ever say it to a person is a separate question for a different day, and it is yours, and nothing here requires it.
Declare this over yourself
- Silence I have kept about this since I was thirty, you are heavy and you were never the sin itself. Psalm 32 says my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long, so the weight in my body was described long before I carried it. A consequence is not a verdict and I have had them fused for decades.
- Belief that God is waiting on me to tell a person first, get off this path, in the name of Jesus. It is written that I acknowledged my sin unto Thee, and Thou forgavest, and there is no second party anywhere in that psalm. Nobody stands between me and the one who does the covering.
- Lord, You are the one who forgives and covers, and Your Spirit has walked this headland beside me for years. I am saying it out loud once into this wind and covering it in a sentence. It is covered, I am Yours, and I am walking down.
