Same café, same long table by the window, same laminated card at every place setting. Bacon rolls in foil, the big steel teapot going round, twenty men and the noise twenty men make at eight on a Saturday. The card has the prayer on it, the one they read out together at the end, and last month he read it out with everybody else and then, in the car park, quietly, said it again on his own, and meant it. He remembers meaning it. That is the part that will not let him alone.
Because on the Wednesday he did the thing. Not a new thing. The exact old thing, the one he had privately named to God in the car park as the thing that was finished now. He did it and he knew while he was doing it, and afterwards he sat in the kitchen with the light off and thought: well, that is that, then. It did not take.
So he came back this morning, and he does not entirely know why. He has the card in his hand under the table. He is turning it over and over against his knee. The man across from him is telling a story about a fence. And what he would like to know, more than he has wanted to know anything for a long time, is whether what he did on Wednesday reversed what happened in the car park, and whether a person can undo the thing God did in them by doing the thing they said they would not.
And this is you. Maybe not a card, maybe not a Wednesday. But you meant it at the time. And then you went and did it, the exact thing, and now you are holding whatever your card is and asking the question you cannot ask the man across the table: did I break it?
He prayed for Peter before Peter failed
Say the pit honestly, because you would see through anything softer. You did it. Not a slip you can explain away, the actual thing, after actually meaning what you said. I am not going to tell you it was smaller than it was, and I am not going to tell you it did not matter, because it did, and you know it did, and an article that said otherwise would lose you at the first line. So we will not start there. We will start with a man who did something worse than you did, and with what Jesus said to him before he did it.
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.Luke 22:32
Look at the order, because the order is the whole message, and the Holy Spirit set it down in that order on purpose. I have prayed for you. Past tense. Before the courtyard, before the fire, before the servant girl, before the rooster. Jesus knew exactly what Peter was about to do, three times, with swearing, and He prayed for him first. The failure did not catch the prayer by surprise. The prayer was already standing there waiting for the failure to arrive.
And then: when you have turned again. Not if. When. Jesus said that to a man who was about to deny knowing Him, and He said it as somebody describing a road that goes down and comes back up, with Himself already at both ends of it.
You have someone who prayed for you before Wednesday, and Wednesday did not catch Him out. I am not saying this to make you feel better in a café. It is written, in red, to a man whose failure was public and complete, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence said to Peter across a courtyard and into your hand under this table. What He did before is not undone by what you did after. That is not a system. It is what happened to Peter, and it is what is written.
Held by His grip and not by your grip on Him
Here is the thing you have had backwards, and it is an easy thing to get backwards, because everybody around the table gets it backwards too. You have been picturing yourself holding on to Him, and Wednesday as the moment your hand opened. So of course it feels like you fell. But that is not the picture Scripture gives. He is the one holding. He always lives to make intercession for them, the letter to the Hebrews says of Christ (Hebrews 7:25). Always. Lives to. It is what He is doing right now, at eight on a Saturday, while you turn a card against your knee.
So the question was never whether your grip held. Your grip did not hold. Nobody's grip holds; that is why there is a Savior and not a coach, and why the Holy Spirit keeps pointing you at His hand and not at yours. The question is whether His grip held, and He was praying for you before Wednesday, and He is praying for you now, and there is no gap in that for a Wednesday to fall through.
You are held by His grip and not by your consistency, and that was true before you failed and it is true this morning. This is not my kindness; it is what is written of Christ, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes held something you can rest your weight on rather than a doctrine you argue about over bacon rolls. What you did afterwards did not reverse what He did before. It could not. The direction of the holding runs from Him to you.
What Wednesday still means, and what it does not
I want to say something carefully now, because two lies are waiting for you at this table and they wear the same coat. The first says Wednesday undid everything. The second says Wednesday did not matter. Both are wrong and the second one is more comfortable, so hear me on it.
Wednesday mattered. Peter went out and wept bitterly (Luke 22:62), and Scripture does not hurry him past it. It cost him something and it should have. And then Jesus, risen, cooked him breakfast on a beach and asked him three times if he loved Him, once for every denial, and sent him to feed the sheep. The turning again was real, and it was called for, and it happened. So nobody is telling you that what you did does not matter or that you can shrug it off. What I am telling you is that it did not reverse the thing underneath it, and that the way back is the way Peter took: not re-doing the car park, but turning again toward the One who was already praying for you.
You have a way back that is not starting over, and it is open right now. He said when you have turned again to Peter as a promise and not a threat, and He said it in writing, and the Holy Spirit is the one turning you while you sit here, not the strength of your resolve. Turning is not the same as reversing. You cannot reverse it. He does not ask you to. He asks you to turn, and He is already facing you.
Here is what is happening at the long table, this minute, with the card in your hand: the order is being put back the right way round. Not Wednesday erased. Wednesday put in its place, which is after the prayer and inside the grip and short of the last word. Jesus prayed for Peter before Peter failed. He is interceding for you now. What you did after did not reverse what He did before, and it is not you deciding that; it is what is written.
You are held, this morning, at this table, with Wednesday still true and not the truest thing. It is written of Christ that He always lives to intercede, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that a floor under you rather than a line you nod at. I am not going to tell you where you stand; that is His to say and He says it, not me. I am telling you what He did and where His hand is. It is where it was on Wednesday. It did not move.
Say the day. Then say what is still true.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with the card still in your hand. Christ is in you and the standing to speak over Wednesday was given to you in Him, not restored to you by a month of behaving. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit carries them, so a voice that still has Wednesday in it is voice enough. What He does from here with the turning again is His to decide, and however He answers, He was praying for you before you failed and He has not stopped.
- Wednesday night, you happened and I am not pretending you did not, and you are still not the last word on me. Jesus prayed for Peter before the rooster crowed, it is written, so what I did after did not reverse what He did before, and He is holding me and not the other way round.
- Verdict that says it did not take, you have sat with me in the dark kitchen since Wednesday and you leave the table now, in the name of Jesus. He always lives to intercede for me, that is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one turning me, so I am held by His grip and not by my consistency, and I am turning back today, not starting over.
- Jesus, You prayed for Peter before he denied You and You are praying for me now, and I thank You that Wednesday did not catch You out. I name the day and I say what is still true, in that order, and what is still true is that Your hand did not move.
