The Ground Changed That Year

The old path is gone. Not blocked, not overgrown. Gone, along with about forty meters of hillside, and it is not coming back in his lifetime or his children's.

The slip came down in a wet March and it took the section above the second gate, and everybody in that valley knows the story and nobody has said a word about it to Manaia in four years, because there is nothing to say. You do not tell a man the hillside will heal. You cut a new route across the scar, higher up, longer, uglier, and you use it, and that is what people have done.

The new way is fine. It gets you there. It is twenty minutes further and there is a step near the top that his aunt cannot manage anymore, and so she does not come up, and that is the actual cost of it, and it is a real cost and it has a name and the name is that his aunt does not come up here now.

He does not think about the hillside when he walks it. He thinks about the year, because the year his own life came apart was that same year, and the parallel has never once let him alone.

What he did changed the landscape of his family. That is the plainest way to say it and it is his own phrase. Things are not blocked; they are gone. There is a way his daughter is with him that will not be un-had. There is a Christmas arrangement that everybody handles carefully and nobody discusses. There is a route his family now takes around a subject, and it is longer and uglier than the old one, and it works, and it is permanent.

And what he has concluded from that, quietly, over four years of walking a new path across a scar, is that a covenant that produced this cannot still be in force. Not because God is cruel. Because the evidence is under his boots. Look at the ground. Ground does not lie.

If you are living with something that will not be un-had, hear the question before anything else. The path is gone and it is not coming back. Which of those two facts did you think was the covenant?

The verse does not tell him the mountain is fine

Now hear what Isaiah does, because this is the one place in Scripture where the picture is exactly his.

For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.Isaiah 54:10

Read the first half and notice what it does not do. It does not say the mountains will stand. It grants the departure. The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed. God offers no reassurance whatsoever about the permanence of landscape, which is the honest thing, and which is exactly what a man standing on a scar needs to hear first.

Then the contrast, and it is deliberately built against the strongest permanent thing anybody in that world could name. Mountains were the byword for what does not move. And God says: those go, and My kindness does not, and the covenant of My peace is not removed.

He is not comparing His covenant to a hillside and calling it as reliable. He is putting it in a different category from hillsides altogether.

You are inside a covenant that is not on the same scale as landscape, and it is already in a different category, and God granted the mountain going before He said one word about His kindness. I am not talking around a man's actual life. It is written in Isaiah 54:10, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a promise built against departing mountains onto a hillside that actually went.

The cost is real and it is not the verdict

And I want to be careful here, because it would be an insult to tell Manaia that the change was smaller than it was.

His aunt does not come up here. That is true. His daughter is how she is with him. That is true. There are consequences with names and faces, and they are not going to be talked away by a verse, and anybody who tried would deserve the silence they got.

But here is the distinction he has never been given: the ground and the covenant are two different objects, and the state of the first has never been evidence about the second.

Ground records what happened. That is what ground is for. A scar is an accurate account of a wet March and it is not a ruling from heaven, and Manaia has been reading a hillside as a judgment for four years because nobody ever told him it was only a hillside.

You are looking at consequences and not at a verdict, and the covenant is already unremoved, and a scar has never once been authorized to pronounce on anybody's standing. Scripture says neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates the record of a March from the ruling of a God.

Who the last clause is about

And there is a phrase on the end of that verse that people read past, and it is the one for him.

Saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.

That is God identifying Himself, in that sentence, by His posture toward the person He is speaking to. Not the Lord who judges thee. Not the Lord who is disappointed in thee. He signs the promise with mercy, as though wanting the reader to know, at the end of the line, exactly who is speaking and how He is disposed.

You are being spoken to by the Lord who has mercy on you, and that is already His stated posture, and it is how He chose to sign the sentence. It is written saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a signature at the end of a verse land on a man who has spent four years reading the ground instead.
