The court opens at about ten past one, and it is always the same court.
Prosecution goes first, and prosecution is thorough. It opens with the thing she said to her mum on Sunday, which she has already apologized for and which has already been forgiven, and it reads it out anyway, in the tone. Then it moves through the year. Then it moves through the older material, the stuff from when she was fifteen, which is filed and indexed and can be produced at short notice.
Defense is her. Defense is a nineteen year old lying on her back with her phone face down on the duvet, saying things like but I did say sorry and but that was ages ago and but I have been trying. Defense is not good. Defense has never once won.
Then comes the verdict, and the verdict is always the same, and it is not really about any of the evidence, which is the strangest part. The verdict is: you are not actually one of them. All the specific charges were only ever there to get to that sentence. And then the court adjourns until tomorrow at ten past one, and she goes to sleep at about three, and she gets up and goes to work and is completely fine and funny and normal, and nobody who knows her would ever guess.
She has never called it a trial. If you asked her she would say she overthinks at night. But it is a trial. It has a docket and a schedule and a judge, and the judge is her own heart, and it has never once found in her favor in four years.
And you know this court. Maybe yours sits at a different hour. But you have lain there under the same jurisdiction, listening to your own chest read out the evidence and hand down the same verdict it hands down every time, and somewhere along the way you started treating that verdict as information about God.
It is not. And there is a verse that saw this coming.
Somebody wrote a verse for exactly this court
Let me put the pit into words, because it is not the one people assume.
The problem is not that she has a sensitive conscience. A sensitive conscience is a gift and it is doing part of its job. The problem is that her conscience has been promoted. It has been given a bench it was never appointed to, and it now issues rulings on a case that was already settled somewhere much higher up, and she has been receiving those rulings as though they came from God.
Now here is John, who knew people like this, writing to people like this.
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.1 John 3:20
Notice that he does not argue with the premise. He does not say your heart will not condemn you. He assumes it will. He writes if, and everyone reading it knew he meant when. And then he does not tell them to feel better. He tells them who outranks the court.
God is greater than our heart. Greater in authority, and He knows all things, which is the part that lands strangest: your heart is not even better informed than He is. It is a worse judge working from a worse file.
You are under a higher jurisdiction than your own chest, and it is already the higher one, and it was higher on every night that court has ever sat. I am not saying that as a nice thought at one in the morning. It is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence written for shaky people straight into a bedroom at ten past one.
Your heart is not a witness, it is a weather system
Here is something worth knowing about that nightly court, and it is almost funny once you see it.
It never sits at eleven in the morning. Have you noticed? The same evidence exists at eleven in the morning. The same facts about your life, the same things from when you were fifteen. And at eleven in the morning you are fine, and the case never gets brought.
That is not because the truth changes at lunchtime. It is because a tired body produces a heavier heart, and a heavier heart produces heavier rulings, and you have been treating the output of an exhausted nervous system as a theological finding.
You have a standing before God that is not adjusted by the hour of the night, and it is already fixed, and your body's tiredness has no authority to amend it. Scripture says that there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that written line hold steady in a room where the light is off and everything feels worse.
Where the case was actually heard
And here is what nobody tells a nineteen year old lying on her back with her phone face down.
The case was already heard. It was heard in public, on a hill, a long time ago, and the charges were read out in full, and they were not softened, and nothing was left off the sheet. And they were answered, not dismissed. Answered. Somebody paid the whole thing.
Which means the court in her chest is not hearing a case. It is re-reading a closed file, badly, with none of the outcome attached.
You are already acquitted, and it is already finished, and the finishing was done where you could not tamper with it. It is written that He canceled the record that stood against us and nailed it to the cross (Colossians 2:14), and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a canceled record and makes the cancellation real in a room at one in the morning.
So we are going to move the case.
Not appeal it. You cannot appeal to your own heart, and arguing with it at one in the morning is how you end up awake at three. You move it. When the court opens tonight, you do not present a defense. You say out loud where the case has already been heard, and you say who the judge is, and you go to sleep.
You are His, and it is already settled, and the settling happened outside your chest where your worst hour cannot reach it. The word says God is greater than our heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been trying to get that sentence to you every night for four years.
Turn the light on to say it. There is a reason for that. A thing said with the light on and your feet on the floor is a different thing from a thing thought in the dark, and the darkness has been getting a free hand for long enough.
Declare this over yourself
- Court that opens in my chest at one in the morning, you are adjourned and you were never the highest bench. 1 John 3:20 is written plainly, that God is greater than my heart and knows all things, and a greater judge outranks a tired one. My case was heard in public a long time ago and it was answered, not postponed.
- Verdict that says I am not really one of them, get out of this room, in the name of Jesus. It is written that there is now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, and no condemnation does not have a night shift. I am not taking rulings from an hour of the night anymore.
- Lord, You are greater than my heart and You know all things, and Your Spirit is the one who brought that verse to a bedroom at ten past one. I am standing up with the light on to say it where I can hear it. The record was canceled, and I am Yours, and I am going to sleep.
1 John 3:20
