Sure In HimRomans 10:9

The One Who Sets Up the Chairs

This message is for the woman who unstacks the chairs and leads other people into assurance every week and has never had any of her own

Half past six, and Nettie has the key.

She always has the key. She has had the key since the year the old caretaker moved to his daughter's, and she is the first one in that hall every Wednesday and the last one out of it, and everybody in that building would tell you she is the reason the whole thing runs.

She unstacks the chairs. Eight rows of nine and a broken one at the back she keeps meaning to throw out. She gets the water on. She puts out the mugs, the good ones at the front because Sister Pauline has arthritis and cannot hold a thin handle. She turns the heater on early in the winter because the hall takes an hour to come up. And by the time the first car pulls in she has been on her feet for fifty minutes and she is in the doorway with her coat off and her arms open, saying, come on in here, come on.

And every Wednesday, at some point in the evening, somebody young or somebody shaking comes and sits by Nettie at the back, and Nettie takes their hand and says the thing she has said a hundred times in that hall. Baby, listen to me. If you confess with your mouth and you believe in your heart, you are saved. Say it. Say it with me now. And she says it with them. And she has watched more people come up out of that chair steady than she could count.

Nettie has never once believed it about herself.

Not for a night. Not for an hour. She has led people to a certainty she has never held in her own two hands, and she has been doing it for nineteen years, and she has never told a living soul, because who exactly would she tell. She is the one they tell.

So she locks up at half past nine and she walks to the car and she says to God, in the dark, every single week, the same sentence: Lord, I do not know what I am to You. I do not know if I am in.

And that is you tonight, or it is close enough. Maybe you do not have the key. But you have handed somebody else the thing you cannot hold, and you have gone home and stood in the dark with the same question, and it is time somebody set a chair out for you.

Turn the verse around and let it face you

Let me say the pit out loud, because Nettie will not and neither will you.

It is not hypocrisy. That is what you are afraid it is, and it is not. A hypocrite says a thing she does not believe. You believe it. You believe it with everything you have, for them. You would go to war for it, for them. What you cannot do is turn it around and let it face you, and the reason is not doubt about the verse. It is a certainty about yourself that you have never once put on the table where the verse could get at it.

So we are putting it on the table.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.Romans 10:9

Look at what the verse asks for and look at what it does not ask for. It asks for a mouth and a heart. It does not ask for a feeling in the car park at half past nine. It does not ask for nineteen years of service. It does not ask you to be the one who never wobbles. And it does not have a second clause underneath it for the woman who has the key.

You are named in that verse exactly the same way the ones in the back row are named, and you have the same mouth and the same Christ. I am not being kind to you at the end of a long night. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who wrote it without an exemption clause for the person carrying the chairs.

The mouth was in the sentence for a reason

Here is something Nettie knows in her body and has never applied to herself.

She always makes them say it out loud. Every time. She does not let them nod. She says, no, baby, out loud, and she waits. And she is right to, because God put the mouth in the sentence. Confess with thy mouth. Something is settled by a thing spoken that is not settled by a thing agreed to in the head, and Nettie has watched that happen in that hall a hundred times.

And then she goes out to her car and does the whole thing in her head, silently, in the dark, and wonders why nothing settles.

You have a mouth, and it is the same equipment God named in the verse, and it works in an empty hall exactly as well as it works in a full one. Scripture says confess with thy mouth, and the Holy Spirit who breathed that line is the one who meets a spoken word in a room with nobody in it.

Serving is not evidence, and it is not disqualification either

Now hear this carefully, because there are two ditches and you have been in both of them in the same week.

Ditch one: my service proves it. It does not. Nineteen years of chairs cannot make a person a child of God, and if it could, then the gospel is for the strong and Nettie is a liar every time she takes a shaking hand in the back row.

Ditch two, and this is the one you actually live in: my service disqualifies me from needing it. As though a woman who ministers cannot come and receive. As though having handed out the bread means you must go hungry.

Both ditches are the same mistake wearing different clothes: they both make your standing about your work.

You are saved by what Christ did and you were saved by it on the same terms as everybody you have ever prayed with, and it is already settled. It is written that there is no difference, for all have sinned and come short, and all are justified freely by His grace (Romans 3:22 to 24), and the Holy Spirit is the one who will not let a woman with a key be treated as a special case.

The breakthrough

So tonight, before you turn the heater off and before you lock that door, you are going to do the thing you have made a hundred other people do.

Out loud. In the empty hall. In your own name.

Not as the woman with the key. Not as the one who leads it. As one more person in a chair, which is what you have been the whole time, and which is the only way anybody has ever come.

You have permission that you never needed, and the door is already open, and it was open on the same terms it has always been open to the ones you brought through it. The word says whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13), and the Holy Spirit is the one who honors a whosoever spoken by a woman standing alone among eight rows of nine.

Then lock up. And go home settled instead of asking.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Chairs I unstack at half past six every week, you are not my qualification and you never were. Romans 10 asks for a mouth and a heart and it never once asked for a key to the hall. I have been handing out ground I was standing on the whole time.
  2. Conclusion I came to about myself in the dark of a parking lot, get out of me, in the name of Jesus. It is written that there is no difference and that all are justified freely by His grace, and no difference means no difference where I am concerned. I am not the exception I have been quietly treating myself as.
  3. Lord, You put the mouth in the verse on purpose and Your Spirit meets a spoken word in an empty room. So I am saying it here, out loud, with the lights still on and nobody in the chairs. Jesus is Lord, You raised Him from the dead, and I am Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
