His father kept everything, and that is where this starts.
There is a metal box in the study that came down to him, and in it is every document of a life: a marriage certificate, a deed, discharge papers, a naturalization certificate with a raised seal you can feel with your thumb, a letter from a hospital, receipts for things nobody remembers buying. His father could produce any of it in about ninety seconds. When a man from the council once told him he had no right to the back strip of the garden, his father went into the study and came out with a document and put it on the kitchen table and said, in a perfectly pleasant voice, read that.
Ari has thought about that scene for most of his adult life. Not with resentment. With longing.
Because on the subject of what he is to God, he has nothing to put on the table. He has a memory. He has an evening in a friend's flat when he was twenty-six, and a conversation that went on until three, and something that happened in him that he still, twenty years later, has no better word for than turning. And a memory is not a document. A memory softens. A memory gets rewritten by every year it passes through. Ari is a careful man and he knows what happens to testimony over two decades, and the fact that his entire standing rests on a recollection that has been handled that many times is a thing he cannot make peace with.
What he wants, and he has never said this out loud because of how childish it sounds, is a certificate. Something with a seal on it. Something he could take out of a box and put on a kitchen table when the man from the council turns up in his own head at two in the morning and says, you have no right to this.
Now, most people, hearing that, would tell him he is being unspiritual and should learn to walk by faith. I am not going to tell him that, because I think his instinct is exactly right, and I think the reason he cannot rest is that nobody has ever shown him the document.
There is one. It has a seal. And the seal is stranger and better than the one on his father's certificate.
The instinct is right: there is a seal
Let me first honor the instinct rather than correcting it, because it did not come from unbelief. It came from taking the question seriously.
A seal, in the world Paul was writing into, was not decoration. It was ownership and it was security. Wax pressed with a signet ring closed a document so that tampering was visible and the owner was named. A sealed thing was a thing somebody had claimed, and everybody who saw the seal knew whose it was.
Now watch what Paul says was sealed and what was used to do it.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.Ephesians 1:13
Read it slowly, because the grammar is doing something. Ye were sealed. You are the document. Not a certificate about you sitting in a box somewhere; you. And the seal is not wax. That holy Spirit of promise. The seal is a Person, and He was given.
You were sealed, and it is already done, and the seal that was pressed into you is the Holy Spirit Himself. I am not softening a hard question with a nice image at somebody's desk. It is written in Ephesians 1:13 in those words, and the Holy Spirit named there as the seal is the very one carrying that sentence to a careful man at two in the morning.
What a deposit is for
Paul does not stop there, and the next verse is the one for a man who keeps documents.
He calls that same Spirit the earnest of our inheritance. An earnest is a deposit: a real, partial payment handed over now, in the same currency as the whole, which both proves the buyer is serious and legally begins the transaction. It is not a promise about money. It is money.
So the question changes shape entirely. Ari has been searching his memory for evidence of a past event. Paul points instead at a present possession. The Spirit is not a receipt for something that happened in a flat in 2006. He is the first installment of the whole inheritance, handed over, held now.
You have the earnest of your inheritance, and it is already in your hands, and a deposit in the same currency is the surest document there is. Scripture calls Him the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of what God has claimed as His own (Ephesians 1:14), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a legal word from a first-century contract land as rest in a study in the late afternoon.
Why your memory was never going to hold this
And here is where I want to be gentle with a careful man, because he has been trying to do something honest with the wrong tool.
His memory has been carrying a weight memory was not built to carry. He has been treating a recollection as the title deed, and then, being an honest man, noticing that his recollection is not reliable enough to be a title deed, and concluding that he therefore has nothing.
But look where the sealing happened in the verse. After that ye heard the word of truth. The sequence begins with something outside him: a word, spoken, true, that was true before he heard it and stayed true whatever his recollection of the evening did afterward. His memory is a witness to the event. It was never the ground of it.
You are standing on a word that was true before you heard it, and it is already true, and it does not thin out as a memory thins. It is written that the word of the Lord endures forever (1 Peter 1:25), and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps an outside word standing when an inside recollection has been handled for twenty years.
So we are going to answer the request rather than dismiss it. You asked for a document with a seal. Here it is, and here is how a man handles it.
You stop searching your memory for the evening in the flat. Not because it did not happen; it did, and it is worth thanking God for. But it is not the paper on the table. The paper on the table is a word spoken outside you and a Spirit given inside you, and neither of those is stored in your recollection where it can fade.
You are sealed and you have the deposit, and it is already yours, and no man at two in the morning has standing to reopen it. The word says you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in the room the whole time being the very thing you were searching the box for.
So put your hand flat on the desk and say it out loud, the way a man reads a document to somebody who has questioned him. Not searching. Reading.
Declare this over yourself
- Demand for a paper I can hold in my hand, you are answered and the answer is better than paper. Ephesians 1:13 says I was sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which makes me the document and makes the seal a Person. My father kept his certificates in a box and mine was given into me.
- Habit of going back to a twenty year old evening for evidence, get out of this study, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the word of the Lord endures forever, and I heard a word that was true before I ever heard it. My memory was a witness to that night and it was never the deed to it.
- Lord, You gave Your Spirit as the earnest of the inheritance and He is the deposit already in my hands. I am reading this out with my hand flat on the desk instead of searching the box again. You finished it, You sealed me, and I am Yours.
