She was eleven when somebody in her class explained to her, with enormous authority, that nothing on the internet is ever really deleted.
He was wrong about most of the details and right about the main thing, and it went into her the way facts do at eleven, which is permanently and without a fight. There is always a copy. Somebody screenshots. Servers keep backups. The archive has a version from before you changed it. You can take a thing down and it is not down, it is only not visible from where you are standing, and one day it will surface, because that is what things do.
Priya is twenty-six now. She works in a job where she is very good at exactly this, and she can tell you in detail why a deleted thing is not deleted, and she is right, and it is a useful thing to be right about.
And she has quietly, without ever once examining it, applied the same architecture to God.
She would not defend it out loud. If you asked her directly she would say of course God forgives. But the working model in her head, the one that runs at two in the afternoon when something reminds her, is a server: the thing she did is not gone, it is archived. Not visible from where she is standing. Retrievable. And one day it will surface, because that is what things do.
So her whole relationship with God has a low background hum of pending exposure, and she does not know that other people do not have that hum.
If you grew up with that fact in your bones, hear this: the fact is true about the internet and it is not true about God, and nobody has ever separated the two for you, and they are two completely different kinds of thing.
He states the policy in the first person
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.Hebrews 8:12
The first thing to see is what kind of sentence this is. It is not a description of God written by an admirer. It is a quotation of God describing His own policy, in the first person, in a covenant document, which is the most binding kind of speech there is in Scripture.
I will remember no more.
Now Priya will immediately do the thing clever people do with that verse, which is to point out that God is omniscient and cannot forget anything. And she will be right about the omniscience and wrong about what the verse is claiming, and the difference is the whole thing.
Remember in a covenant does not mean recall. It means act on. When Scripture says God remembered His covenant, it does not mean it had slipped His mind and came back. It means He moved on it. So I will remember no more is not a claim about divine memory failure. It is a legal undertaking: I will not act on this, ever, in any dealing I have with you.
You are inside an undertaking that nothing will be acted on, and it is already given in the first person, and it is not a claim about forgetting but about what will never be brought against you. I am not being clever to make a young woman feel better. It is written in Hebrews 8:12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a covenant clause and makes it land on somebody who thinks in servers.
A cache and a covenant are not the same object
Here is the distinction, and once you have it you cannot unsee it.
An archive is passive. Nobody at any company has undertaken anything about your data; it simply sits there, and whether it surfaces depends on systems, accidents and other people's decisions. That is exactly why the hum never stops: there is no promise anywhere in that architecture. There is only storage.
A covenant is the opposite. It is a person binding themselves, out loud, about what they will do. The security is not that the information is unavailable. The security is that somebody has given their word about it, and the whole question becomes who gave the word.
You are held by somebody's word and not by the unavailability of a record, and the word is already given. Scripture says God is not a man that He should lie, nor the son of man that He should repent (Numbers 23:19), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the difference between storage and a promise land in a person trained by the internet.
The hum is not conviction
One more thing, because it matters and nobody says it.
That background hum of pending exposure is not the Holy Spirit convicting her. Conviction is specific, it is about a particular thing, it comes with a way forward, and it stops when the thing is dealt with. The hum has none of those properties. It is not about anything in particular. It has no way forward attached. It never stops, and it has never once produced a single change in her life.
That is not God. That is a model she absorbed at eleven from a boy who was mostly wrong.
You are not living under a permanent low grade accusation from God, and it is already dealt with, and He does not hum. It is written that there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts specifically and never leaves a person under a general dread.
So this afternoon, at that desk, we are going to close the loop the way you actually think.
You are going to name it out loud, once, to God. Not type it. Say it, because saying is the thing you never do and typing is the thing you always do, and this needs to happen somewhere no server has ever been.
And then cover it in one sentence: that Christ carried this, and it is covered.
You are covered by a covenant undertaking and not by a deletion you have to trust, and it is already in writing. The word says their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a legal clause do for a young woman what no amount of clearing history has ever done.
Then get back to work. And when the hum starts at about two tomorrow, you do not argue with it. You say the sentence again. It has an answer now.
Declare this over yourself
- Assumption that God runs on the same architecture as a server, you are wrong and nothing about Him was ever cached. Hebrews 8:12 says their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more, and in a covenant, to remember means to act on. Nothing is being kept back to surface later, because a covenant is a word given and not a copy stored.
- Background hum of pending exposure, get out of my room, in the name of Jesus. It is written that there is now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, and conviction is specific and has a way forward and stops. I am not going to keep mistaking a model I absorbed at eleven for the voice of God.
- Lord, You put it in the first person in a covenant and Your Spirit is the one handing me the letter rather than the reassurance. I am saying it out loud once, somewhere no server has ever been, and covering it. It is covered, I am Yours, and the hum has an answer now.
